Life and Recovery After a Spinal Cord Injury

SAN DIEGO, CA: In July of 2014 Conor’s life changed forever as he dove into the ocean and suffered a C5 spinal cord injury. Since that moment he has continued to find the drive and determination to overcome his injury. One day he plans to continue his worldly travels, “on his own two feet”, and we know that he will overcome any obstacle in his way. Conor is this month’s client spotlight in San Diego. SAN DIEGO, CA: Ever meet someone that never had a bad word to say about anyone? Someone that helped everyone and asked for nothing in return? This is Lars de Beer and he is this month’s Client Spotlight in San Diego.

Alli a C5 spinal cord injury visiting in San Diego

Alli suffered a C5 spinal cord injury due to a sledding accident. She joined our San Diego team last year and made great progress. To continue her recovery at home, her mom completed the Train Your Trainer program. A year later she has shown tremendous progress during her return visit and we couldn’t be more proud of her. Way to go Alli! Keep up the hard work.

Baby Izaiah making strides in his recovery

“Baby Izaiah” has been on a long road to recovery since a 2010 accident left him paralyzed and unable to speak due to a brain injury. He has made progress every year but just recently has really taken off and stood unassisted for the very first time! Way to go Izaiah!

Daniel lives with ALS and has traveled all the way from Australia to join the Project Walk family. He has been with our San Diego team for nearly six weeks and is doing great. Way to go Daniel! We are so proud of your progress.

Finding the Strength to Recover

An annual canoe trip with friends turned to a tragic accident for then 23-year-old, Katy Blake who found herself face down in water unable to move her limbs. While horsing around with a buddy, Blake jumped into the Little Black Creek in Hattiesburg, MS and immediately knew that the water was too shallow. Seeing her lifeless body floating face down, that same friend jumped in after Katy and pulled her to the sandbar where Blake explained her inability to move. She was rushed to the hospital where it was determined that Blake suffered from an incomplete spinal cord injury at the C-5 vertebrae and would now have to embrace life as a quadriplegic.

From Hope to How Soon?

Paralympian swimmer, Victoria Arlen defies odds and comes back from a vegetative state to win gold at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. With the same determination competing in the pool, Arlen now focuses her energy at taking steps at the Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury facility in Carlsbad.

Spinal Cord Injury Victim Runs Laps Around Those Who Did Not Believe

Christian Olpin, an adventurous twenty-something survives an almost fatal motorcycle accident leaving him with a C6 spinal cord injury. Despite medical professionals doubting his chance of recovery, Christian puts the “nay-sayers” to rest as he regains the ability to walk with the help of the Project Walk Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center in Carlsbad.
